About the project
Welcome to the Portable Mozilla project. Our aim with this project is to make the Mozilla standalone products (Firefox, Thunderbird, Sunbird, etc.) truly portable. We want to enable users to take the entire suite with them on their removable media and optionally remotely store their profile/bookmarks. Our goal is to get the entire suite of apps installed on 16M removable media (USB drives and the like) with room left over. We also want to give the user the choice of what parts of the suite to install, in case certain functionality isn't needed.
Note: Yes, we are aware of the Portable Firefox and Portable Thunderbird projects. We discussed our projects and decided to go our own ways as our project goals are different. We will share information with them freely, and build upon their ideas to make a first rate product.
Goals
Here's a list of our short term goals:
- Easily (un)installable
- Windows support first, others to follow (Mac and Linux)
- Small footprints for all apps
- Configured for minumum writes to USB media to preserve lifespan of media.
- Inclusion of extensions that enhance portability
- Optional remote saving of profile/bookmarks/cookies/email
Project News
Currently, we are moving in and setting up shop. We are trying to progress as fast as we can given limited free time to work on this. Our first goal after getting the website set up is to start compressing binaries, JARs and images. Once we are on par with the other Portable project, we will start our customizations.
Project Help
If you would like to contribute to this project, let me know. We could use people that are knowledgeable with the Nullsoft Installer System, and those that can compile Firefox and Thunderbird from scratch, optimized for size. Additionally, if you have an extension that you think would fit in well with the portable project, we'd love to hear from you.
